Who can apply?

Any foreign citizen—whether a resident or non-resident in Spain—who needs to carry out a legal or economic procedure within Spanish territory is eligible to apply for a NIE.

Where is it requested?

The NIE can be requested either in Spain or from abroad, depending on your circumstances:

1. Application in Spain

This must be done in person at a Foreigners’ Office (Oficina de Extranjería) or National Police Station. In certain cases, an accredited legal representative may apply on your behalf.

Required documentation:

• Official form EX-15.

• Copy of the complete passport or a valid identity document (along with the original for verification).

• Proof justifying the reason for the application (e.g., job offer, property purchase, academic enrollment).

• Proof of payment of the administrative fee (form 790, code 012).

2. Application from abroad

You may apply at the Spanish Consulate in your country of origin or legal residence.

Typical documentation:

• Form EX-15.

• Valid passport.

• Supporting documentation explaining the reason for the request.

• Applicable consular fee.

How long does it take?

Processing times vary by office, but the NIE is generally issued within 5 to 15 business days.

Key Considerations

• The NIE does not constitute authorization to reside or work in Spain. A separate permit is required for those purposes.

• While the NIE certificate typically has a temporary validity (usually 3 months), the assigned number does not expire.
